For our first winter here in Michigan, I am making a list of all the suggested cold weather gear that everyone says we should buy for the Wee Child. I barely remember my time as a child in Wyoming, so the idea of having a snowsuit isn’t foreign, but definitely not something I am used to worrying about. This list includes some of our top suggestions to help you keep your kids warm in the colder winter months.

Your budget will vary, but these really are things you don’t just want but need to stay safe in colder weather. In some states and regions, you’ll find temperatures dropping well below freezing, and often into negative temperatures. When it comes time to battle the play time in the snow, or simply a walk to school in freezing temperatures you need this cold weather gear. Included in this list are a few items that I found from our sponsor Sophia’s Style. They offer a wide variety of items for kids that aren’t just useful, but cute and fashionable. Trust me, cold weather gear is not always fashionable, so this is a huge bonus.

Thermal clothing. We all have memories of struggling into thermal underwear as kids, but there are so many amazing options of thermal clothing now that you have to invest. Kids will appreciate the layers so they can stay warm for longer outside, and you’ll love the durability. There are a lot of fashion forward thermal pieces now, so they won’t feel like they are wearing something ugly underneath their hoodie or sweater.
Layerable sweaters and shirts. The best options are all about layers. Add the thermal items underneath a nice long sleeved t-shirt, flannel shirt, or hoodie sweatshirt. Sophia’s Style has tons of cute boys shirts and sweaters that I fell in love with. I can add some simple solid long-sleeved t-shirts to the Wee Child’s wardrobe and then add some of these boys hoodies or sweaters on top for fashion that is functional. They also have a huge number of super cute girls sweaters to choose from.
Hooded Jacket: A hoodie or hooded jacket is a must. These are perfect for those days when things aren’t as cold outside, but also ideal for layering. Since they are thinner than a typical winter coat, they don’t offer as much heat, but they will help when layered. Plus they have great pockets and of course the hood that can slip over the Wee Child’s head and keep his ears warm.
Puffer Coat: The classic puffer coat is a must when you think of cold weather gear for your kids. Most are made with great thermal interior and the water resistance exteriors. I loved that Sophia’s style had some really cute and colorful options in both girls outerwear and boys outerwear.
SnowSuit: If you live in an area with much snowfall during winter months, this is a must. Expect to spend a good bit of money on a complete snowsuit. Most people prefer to buy the all in one overall type snowsuit versus just buying the pants and jacket. This will keep snow out of the kids pants and keep them safely warm longer.
Waterproof Boots: I think about rain boots usually, and this works great for short time outdoors in the snow, but they just don’t offer the protection from the cold. When you are going to be outside in the snow for long, you really need a quality winter snow boot that is lined for added warmth on the inside and coated for water resistance on the outside.
Waterproof Gloves: Gloves are a must, and while the fun kids gloves are definitely on the list, I highly recommend investing in some vinyl exterior waterproof gloves for those days the kids are out playing in the snow. Even in what you think aren’t the coldest of temperatures, frostbite can be an issue. I may be paranoid, but I’d rather be safe than sorry.
Ear Muffs, Scarves, and Hats: While we mentioned the hooded jackets before, a good beanie knitted cap and ear muffs are a must. Wrap up your neck with a scarf on top of that, and you keep all skin covered and protected. Your kids may not like being covered up so much, but it will protect them from the elements and make it safer to stay out for longer.
Lined Pants: These are truly one of the best inventions in cold weather gear. You can find snowsuits that are obviously lined, or just fun athletic style pants that are also lined with flannel or fleece. These add that extra layer of warmth and are easy to afford at almost every store online or locally.
Cold weather gear is a must for many families each winter. As we are now approaching our first full winter in Michigan, we are fast realizing how important it is to stay warm, dry, and protected in the colder months. I hope these tips help you to keep your kids warm this winter just like they are helping us!
