We are working hard to rework our diet to include more healthy options and fewer high in fat and calorie foods.  One of the biggest to help us feel satisfied with the new options is to make sure they all have great flavors that satisfy our senses.  This Easy Low Fat Asian Slaw is perfect alongside any sandwich, but went perfectly with these Asian BBQ Pork Sliders I made for a client last week.  With just a few simple ingredients and a quick toss this slaw is ready to serve.  We cheat by using a ready made cabbage mix we buy in bulk at Sam's Club, but you can easily substitute with the same amount of shredded cabbage, carrot and onion if you prefer a bit of extra "bite".

EASY LOW FAT ASIAN SLAW

INGREDIENTS
3 Cups Shredded Cabbage/Carrot Cole Slaw Mix (without dressing)
½ Cup Seasoned Rice Vinegar
¼ Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
⅓ Cup Soy Sauce
1 Teaspoon Hoison Sauce
1 Tablespoon Sesame Seeds
1 Teaspoon Fresh Minced Ginger
1 Teaspoon Minced Garlic

DIRECTIONS

  • In medium bowl whisk together all ingredients except for cabbage mix
  • Pour over cabbage mix and toss until well dressed
  • Refrigerate for 1-2 hours to allow flavors to soak in

We love this by itself as a side to barbecue or our favorite simple turkey sandwiches.  If you prefer less of a "bite" you can reduce the amount of fresh ginger or use a dried powdered ginger instead.  We love the sharp flavor and the satisfaction it gives without the added calories of traditional dressings.

This easy low fat Asian slaw is a great side dish to whip up quickly and take to your next barbecue get together with friends or family.  Make sure to toss it again before serving as the dressing will tend to settle some at the bottom of the bowl.
