Vegan Black Bean Brownies
A lot of people don’t care for typical vegan black bean brownies because the flavor isn’t sweet enough. This is not a sugar-free recipe though. I’ve worked with it a few times and finally came to one that I really enjoy. You can use canned black beans, or you can cook from dry beans without seasonings. Whatever you prefer will work just the same.

I appreciate all your hard work! This recipe didn’t work out for me. There was barely enough batter to cover a 9×13 Pan and it came out very flat and dry. I followed the instructions and ingredient list exactly. I’m wondering if maybe something is missing or the measurements are off. Mine looked nothing like this photo. Thanks again!
Katie says
Hi Danielle! I am sorry! Thank you for pointing that out. It should be an 8×8″ pan for this. The ingredients and directions are correct, but the pan size we use is not. You may want to adjust the time if they are too dry. Some ovens cook hotter. Sorry!

I made then today and they were not sweet at all. I’m thinking if next time I blended up some dates with the black beans they would be good!! Might add a few points but would be more brownie like!
Stephanie says
Do you need to rinse the black beans first?
Katie says
I do not, but you can.
Jaime says
You have two different quantities for the amount of molasses listed in this post. I started with the 1/8 cup directions, but it was super thick. Then I saw the 1/4 cup measurement and the batter loosened up a bit—I’m assuming that’s the correct one. Is that so?
Katie says
1/4 cup is correct.
Tara says
I tried these and I thought the molasses flavor was way too strong, it took over the whole brownie. Is there a substitute?
Deana says
You have 1/2 cup flour listed in the instructions but then only have 1/4 cup flour listed on the recipe below that. Which is correct?
Katie says
It is 1/2 cup. It has been corrected.

I was excited about making these but they just aren’t sweet enough. Ty taste like blacks beans and molasses. I think I’ll adjust the recipe a bit to add a different sweetener.
These just aren’t cutting it for my craving!

I wanted to love this recipe but just couldn’t. It wasn’t sweet enough and tasted like the molasses. I tried adding some sweetener, but it just didn’t work. I love other recipes on this site, but not this one.
